During a recent meeting in Cairo, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a new security framework for the Middle East that emphasizes cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty. In discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Xi outlined a four-point approach aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation, resolving interconnected conflicts, supporting economic growth, and improving international coordination. Stressing the importance of regional autonomy, Xi advocated for Middle Eastern countries to assume more responsibility for their own security and cautioned against interference by external powers. He also highlighted the Palestinian issue as a central factor in addressing broader tensions across the region.
China has expressed its readiness to collaborate with Middle Eastern nations on safeguarding international shipping routes, promoting economic development, and tackling the root causes of conflicts. Xi emphasized that the United Nations Charter and international law should serve as the foundation for addressing regional issues. The talks in Cairo also placed significant emphasis on enhancing economic relations between China and Egypt. Xi encouraged increased collaboration in various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy.
As Egypt’s largest trading partner and primary source of imports for 14 consecutive years, China has seen its bilateral trade with Egypt grow from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025. The meeting between Xi and El-Sisi resulted in the signing of more than 20 cooperation agreements that span areas such as artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains. These agreements are aimed at strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
The discussions between the two leaders underscored the importance of deepening economic ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation. As part of their strategic partnership, China and Egypt are committed to working together on projects that drive economic development and address shared challenges. By fostering collaboration in critical sectors, both nations aim to build a more robust and resilient economic relationship that benefits their respective populations.
