South Africa Enforces New Digital Declarations for Vehicles at Borders

by admin477351

South Africa is set to introduce a digital customs declaration system that mandates all travelers entering or leaving the country to submit their declarations online starting June 1, 2026. This new requirement is part of updated border regulations aiming to modernize the management of cross-border travel and trade.

Travelers bringing foreign-registered vehicles into South Africa will now need to declare these vehicles at the ports of entry and secure a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). This rule applies to all foreign vehicles, including those from Southern African Customs Union (SACU) member states, ensuring they comply with the new customs laws.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has developed the Traveller Declaration System to enhance border management, increase compliance, and streamline processes. Under this system, foreign vehicles can legally remain in South Africa for up to six months with a TIP, allowing for multiple entries and exits without requiring new permits for each crossing.

There is no fee for submitting an online customs declaration or obtaining a TIP. Travelers can complete the necessary processes via the SARS website or mobile app before reaching the border, where they will receive a reference number to present upon entry or exit. For those who have not pre-completed the declaration, digital kiosks and support services at border posts will assist with the process.

Despite the transition to digital declarations, customs inspections and border checks will continue where needed. Officials emphasize that the system is designed to reduce paperwork, improve efficiency, bolster border security, and enhance revenue collection, all while simplifying compliance for legitimate travelers. These changes are part of South Africa’s broader initiative to modernize customs administration and improve the regulation of cross-border movements of people, goods, and vehicles.
