by admin477351

South Africa is bracing for a challenging bout of severe winter weather as meteorological authorities warn of heavy rainfall, snowfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms across several provinces. The most severe alerts include an Orange Level 8 warning for the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, signaling heavy rain that could lead to road and bridge flooding, hazardous river conditions, and potential road closures. Between East London and Morgan Bay, an Orange Level 5 warning indicates the possibility of significant flooding, mudslides, and resident displacement.

Weather alerts also extend to a Yellow Level 4 warning for flooding risks in the eastern parts of the Western Cape and sections of the Eastern Cape. The forecast predicts localized flooding under a Yellow Level 2 warning for other areas within these provinces. Additionally, high-lying regions of the Eastern Cape should prepare for snowfall and icy roads. Coastal areas between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay face a Yellow Level 4 warning for strong winds and rough seas, and damaging waves are expected along parts of the southern coastline under a Yellow Level 2 warning. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, and lightning are also anticipated.

The provincial forecasts indicate varied weather conditions across the country. Gauteng will experience cloudy and cool conditions with isolated showers and thunderstorms, while Mpumalanga will have morning fog followed by partly cloudy and cool weather, with warmer temperatures in the Lowveld. Limpopo is set for cloudy, windy, and cold to very cold weather, accompanied by scattered showers and thunderstorms. North West will see cloudy, windy, and cool conditions with isolated rain, while the Free State will face cold to very cold weather with more widespread showers and thunderstorms. The Northern Cape is forecasted to be cloudy, windy, and very cold, with isolated showers and thunderstorms, and moderate to fresh south-easterly winds along the coast.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape is expected to experience cold and cloudy conditions with widespread rain in its eastern parts. Light snow is anticipated over high-lying areas of the Central Karoo, along with strong coastal winds. The Eastern Cape is forecasted for very cold weather with widespread showers, thunderstorms, and snowfall at high altitudes, accompanied by strong coastal winds. KwaZulu-Natal will start with morning fog inland, leading to cloudy and cold conditions, with widespread showers and thunderstorms, though less rain is expected in the northern regions.

The advisory emphasizes that residents across much of the Eastern Cape, central and eastern Western Cape, and southern parts of the Northern Cape should prepare for very cold, wet, and windy weather. Snowfall is predicted over mountain peaks and higher elevations, while flooding remains a major concern in parts of the Western and Eastern Cape. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to stay updated on local weather developments, avoid flooded roads, and exercise caution when near rivers, coastlines, and mountain passes.
