South Africa to Launch Biometric e-Passport Aiming for Faster Border Processing

by admin477351

South Africa is set to launch a new biometric e-passport aimed at enhancing document security and expediting border processing. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber announced that the department is collaborating with Government Printing Works to develop the passport, which will feature a secure electronic chip containing biometric information for identity verification.

The introduction of this biometric technology is expected to make South African passports more secure and challenging to forge. It will also facilitate faster processing at airports equipped with automated passport control systems. When scanned, the biometric chip will allow border authorities to compare the stored electronic information with the traveller’s biometric identity and passport details.

Besides the technological upgrade, South Africa is revamping its passport application process. New measures include biometric verification of passport photographs to minimize fraud, such as attempts to alter photographs during applications. The government is also considering expanding passport services through bank branches as part of its modernization efforts for Home Affairs services.

The new e-passport promises to make international travel more convenient for eligible travellers, as it could enable the use of automated border control gates at supporting airports. These systems would perform biometric checks, potentially reducing the need for manual document inspection and decreasing immigration queue times.

Additionally, South Africa hopes that the enhanced security of the new passport will aid in negotiating visa-free travel agreements with more countries. While the passport itself does not automatically grant visa-free access, its improved security features may strengthen South Africa’s position in such discussions.

Although the biometric e-passport is not yet available, and there is no confirmed date for its release, the Department of Home Affairs and Government Printing Works continue to work on the project. A proposal is expected to be submitted to Cabinet once the passport application system is further automated and fortified against fraud.
