Ramaphosa Evaluates Reinstatement of Police Commissioner After Charges Dropped

by admin477351

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is deliberating the potential reinstatement of General Fannie Masemola as the national police commissioner after the withdrawal of criminal charges against him. The charges, linked to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act concerning a South African Police Service healthcare tender with Medicare24 Tshwane District, were formally dropped in a Pretoria magistrate’s court.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided to withdraw the charges following a review of the evidence, concluding there was no reasonable prospect of securing a successful prosecution. This determination came after input from the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption and assessments by a case review panel and independent legal counsel. However, the NPA noted that the withdrawal of charges does not automatically end Masemola’s suspension, leaving Ramaphosa to make the final decision on his reinstatement.

General Masemola has expressed his readiness to resume his duties pending the president’s decision. Despite the withdrawal of charges against Masemola, the investigation into the Medicare24 contract continues, focusing on other individuals accused of corruption and irregularities related to the tender.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged the NPA’s decision but emphasized that the government has not yet reached a conclusion regarding Masemola’s suspension. The situation remains under consideration as authorities continue to address the broader implications of the healthcare tender investigation.
