During testimony before the Madlanga Commission, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala mentioned South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s name in connection with confidential information allegedly exchanged with senior police officials. The commission is scrutinizing a document containing personal details purportedly linked to Ramaphosa that Matlala reportedly passed on to Major-General Lesetja Senona, the former head of the KwaZulu-Natal Hawks, after receiving it from private investigator Calvin Rafadi.
Matlala, however, stated that he merely forwarded the document and was unaware of its contents or origin. His statements did not indicate any wrongdoing on the part of Ramaphosa. The commission is also delving into Matlala’s connection with Senona, whom Matlala described as an “older brother.” He revealed that Senona had lent him R20,000 following a police raid on his property in Pretoria in December 2024.
Further allegations emerged from Matlala involving suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya. Matlala accused Sergeant Fannie Nkosi of acting as a go-between in the alleged collection of money from individuals in Gauteng. However, Matlala refrained from naming those individuals, citing his right against self-incrimination due to ongoing criminal proceedings against him.
The Madlanga Commission is tasked with investigating claims of corruption, criminal conduct, and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system. As the probe continues, the commission aims to shed light on the intricate dynamics and alleged misconduct within the police force and its impact on the country’s justice processes.
