South African drivers are bracing for a potential increase in fuel prices come September, as recent data signals a hike across petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin. According to the latest figures, motorists might see a rise of about 83 cents per litre for 93 petrol and 94 cents for 95 petrol. Diesel prices are projected to surge more significantly, with increases of roughly R2.87 per litre for 0.05% diesel and R3.07 for 0.005% diesel. Illuminating paraffin, too, is expected to climb, potentially by R2.24 per litre.
Particularly concerning is the impact of rising diesel costs, given its extensive use across various sectors such as freight, agriculture, construction, and mining. A considerable rise in diesel prices could lead to increased transportation and operational expenses, which may subsequently exert upward pressure on food and consumer goods prices.
Despite the steep projections, there is a sense of relief compared to the scenario earlier in August, when petrol was expected to jump by around R1 per litre, and diesel was forecasted to rise by nearly R5 per litre. Nevertheless, the latest data indicates that the pressure on fuel costs remains substantial, largely driven by international oil prices and the fluctuations of the rand against the dollar.
The interplay between global petroleum prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate continues to be the primary influences on South Africa’s monthly fuel price adjustments. While a relatively stable rand has mitigated some of the impact, higher international oil prices are still contributing to under-recoveries in fuel costs.
It’s important to note that these figures are preliminary and subject to change before the final adjustments are announced. The new fuel prices are anticipated to be implemented on September 1, 2026.
