South Africa has emerged as the second-best choice globally for wildlife vacations, according to a recent international survey, underscoring its allure as a premier destination for nature and safari enthusiasts. The survey, which included 2,400 travelers from 12 different countries, revealed that 72% of participants prioritize wildlife experiences when selecting their holiday spots. This growing interest is mirrored in digital behavior, with a remarkable 211% rise in global online searches for “wildlife holidays” over the past year.
While Australia claimed the top spot in the survey, South Africa ranked impressively in second place, surpassing other renowned wildlife locations such as Kenya, Canada, and China. The nation’s appeal lies in its rich biodiversity and varied ecosystems, offering visitors a plethora of experiences from Big Five safaris to whale watching, birding, and encounters with African penguins.
The findings of the report indicate a shift in travel preferences, with an increasing number of tourists seeking immersive experiences in nature rather than conventional sightseeing tours. This change suggests a growing desire for deeper connections with the natural world during travel.
Globally, the survey found that the giant panda is the most sought-after animal for travelers wishing to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Following closely are elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Notably, among Africa’s famous Big Five, the elephant was the only species to make it into the global top five, reflecting its enduring appeal to wildlife enthusiasts.
